5 Spots to Put On Your Family Staycation Itinerary for 2024

Planning a family trip in Scotland this year? Whether you’re looking for a last-minute February half term getaway, a summer staycation or maybe you’re being super organised and already looking towards an October break, Scotland has so much to offer families of all shapes and sizes. We’ve rounded up five of the best easy-to-reach locations for families to give you some inspiration for your next trip.

  1. Millport

Also known as the Isle of Cumbrae, this beautiful island off the west coast of Scotland is easy to get to and perfect for a young family. Just a short ferry ride across from Largs, Millport has been a firm favourite for Scottish families for generations and it still holds the same charm it did for your parents and grandparents.

You can’t go to Millport without cycling around the island, but don’t worry you don’t need to pack everyone’s bikes, you can hire from Mapes which has a huge variety of bike styles and sizes.For the best views of the island, visit Glaid Stone viewpoint and search for the various quirky rock formations on the beaches including the famous Crocodile Rock which is always a big hit with young kids.
When it comes to accommodation taking your motorhome across on the ferry is easy – but remember to pre-book. Check out Garrison House right in the heart of the island for an easy access location.

  1. Fort William

The gateway to Ben Nevis, this town is often described as the outdoor capital of the UK and the perfect location if you are an adventure seeking family.

If your kids are up for a challenge, you can hire a local guide and scramble the face of Ben Nevis which is Scotland’s highest mountain. This is an exciting route but not for the faint hearted. For younger kids try Steall Falls for a shorter walk, paddle and a picnic – the crystal clear, shallow waters here are just perfect. You can also explore the picturesque old town of Fort William, and you can even do some wildlife spotting as the tides comes in and out.

There are plenty of motorhome sites to pitch at in and around the area. Glen Nevis Holiday Park has some beautiful holiday homes as well as space for motorhomes and caravans. Bunree is also great for families with facilities for kids.

  1. Elie

This beautiful spot on the East coast of Scotland is perfect for kids of all ages, from tots to teens, there’s plenty to keep them entertained. Easily accessible from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, and Aberdeen, this is a great location if you don’t want to travel too far but still want to escape the bustle of city life.

If your family loves to be close to the sea, then the East Neuk of Fife is the perfect spot. There are many beautiful beaches including Elie, Pittenweem, Lundin Links, Leven and even St Andrews. There are water sports galore and thanks to the sandy curve of Elie Bay it’s the perfect sport for beginners because of the sheltered waters.   1. Moffat

Heading south, Moffat in Dumfries in Galloway, just a mile off the M74 is a great place to stop as part of a wider tour of Scotland or for a short break. There are plenty of things for families to do in and around the town. Escape to Grey Mares Tail Nature Reserve where families can marvel at the 200ft waterfall that tumbles from Loch Skeen into the Moffat Water Valley. A recognised Special Area of Conservation, this is a paradise for hill walkers, botanists, and wildlife enthusiast.

For family fun, Station Park is a must-visit with its boating pond, large play park and interactive water feature, it’s the perfect spot to let off steam. For some culture and heritage, Drumlanrig Castle is a great option for a day out. You can explore the grandeur of the castle or enjoy miles of beautiful walks within the estate.

When it comes to pitching, Moffat Campsite is a great choice. The high street is just a five minute walk away, Statin Park is nearby and there rae planet of surrounding hill walks.

  1. Blair Atholl

This Perthshire village is home to the impressive Blair Castle and is surrounded by some of Scotland’s most breath-taking scenery. A stop-over here will certainly bring out the true Scot in you.

Blair Castle is a must-visit and with its Castle Detective challenge and Treasure Room activities it will keep families entertained for hours.

To really immerse yourself in Perthshire countryside take a trip to Faskally Wood with its diverse wildlife, woodland trails and the tranquil Loch Dunmore. Explore Forester’s Trail, enjoy a picnic and breathe in the fresh Scottish air.

If you want to refuel after a long walk, make your way to the famous House of Bruar for one of their delicious cakes and a bit of retail therapy.

Aberfeldy Caravan Park sits right on the banks of the River Tay, and although around 10 miles from the town of Blair Atholl it’s the perfect base to explore the region.
